Project ACIDD

The first ever grad-student led oceanographic research cruise in the Santa Barbara Channel, Project ACIDD (Across the Channel Investigating Diel Dynamics) aimed to study to what extent daily variations in top down processes shape biogeochemical cycling in the region. Our very own Nicholas Huynh served as Co-chief scientist on this project. In addition to the original mission, the team undertook an unexpected second objective when the Thomas Fire raged through Santa Barbara County just prior to departure. The scientists decided to supplement the cruise to answer questions about the effect of ash on the ocean environment. Please check out the instagram feed and news articles below to learn more!

Microbial oceanography, focused on linking marine bacterioplankton to the cycling the elements through their consumption of dissolved organic matter.
