BIOS-SCOPE

BIOS-SCOPE is a five year, multi-institutional research program for the study of microbial oceanography in the North Atlantic Ocean, with fieldwork centered near the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) site. Established in 2015, the underlying objective of this project is to cultivate cross-disciplinary collaborations that utilize a broad suite of scientific approaches, integrating genomic data with field measurements to evaluate marine microbial communities and their influence on biogeochemical cycles in the ocean.

Within the scope of this program, the Carlson Lab at UCSB is focused on microbial processing and response to dissolved organic matter variability.

Affiliated Researchers

Professor
Studies the interaction between microbes and the biogeochemical processing of marine organic matter.
Postdoctoral Researcher
Microbial degradation and transformation of DOM in seawater.
Specialist/Laboratory Manager
Responsible for curating DOM and microbial datasets, overseeing day-to-day operations in the lab, and facilitating fieldwork on the variety of projects ongoing in our lab group.
Lab Technician
Responsible for the collection and analysis of dissolved organic matter from a number of coastal and open ocean sites, including participation in the US CLIVAR Repeat Hydrography Program.
